School of Mathematics and Systems Science of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics separated from School of Science in December 2008, and was officially established on June 1, 2009. It was the result of Beihang University’s ambitious drive of developing into a comprehensive university with sciences, engineering and social sciences, and of its development strategy of thriving into a world’s first-rank university featuring such key branches as aeronautics, astronautics and information. The school’s history can be dated back to the Department of Fundamentals when the university was founded, and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics and subsequent School of Science after the reform and opening up. In the decades after its birth, the school has trained and cultivated a growing army of excellent talents with a solid base of scientific knowledge. The establishment of the school marked a strategic transformation of Beihang University’s branch of mathematics from a solely teaching unit into a research-oriented unit focusing equally on teaching and research. Now, the school has made itself an important pillar of Beihang university in training creative talents and a great force pushing the university up into the world’s top rank.
